AVSL ASCO SIG Plan, 2022-23

The Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry’s Vision Science Librarians Special Interest Group is, along with the Medical Library Association’s Vision Science Caucus, one expression of the Association of Vision Science Librarians (AVSL). The ASCO Vision Science Librarians SIG is free and open to all librarians, or people acting in that capacity, whose collections and services include the literature of vision. The ASCO Vision Science Librarians SIG/AVSL offers a platform for members to develop their leadership skills, present to an international audience, collaborate, and share best practices. Members do not need to belong to MLA to participate.

As a group whose members span the globe, the ASCO Vision Science Librarians SIG/AVSL fully supports Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) as a core value of our organization. We recognize that our strength lies in our diverse, international membership, and strive to create an equitable and inclusive arena in which we respect and celebrate different points of view. Our Values

The ASCO Vision Science SIG seeks to embody the mission and vision of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO). We do so by keeping the following four core values in mind:

Leadership

All ASCO Vision Science Librarians SIG members who wish to advance their leadership skills have the opportunity to do so within AVSL.

Professional Development

The ASCO Vision Science SIG fosters professional development for vision science librarians, both as a means of career advancement as well as improving the quality of collections and services to our respective communities.

Collaboration

The ASCO Vision Science SIG is an organization that promotes and fosters equity, inclusivity and collaboration between members. We are fortunate to have a diverse and international membership, and are committed to ensuring that all members have equal opportunities to work with and learn from each other.

Sustainability

The ASCO Vision Science SIG’s processes and projects are transparent and straightforward enough to be continued across changes in leadership, while also remaining impactful.
