Vetted List of Vision Science Journals

This Vetted List of Vision Science Journals (Vetted Journals List for short) was created and is maintained by the Association of Vision Science Librarians (AVSL). It was previously known as the “AVSL Whitelist of Vision Science Journals.” The Vetted Journals List was awarded the 2020 Louise Darling Medal for Distinguished Achievement in Collection Development in the Health Sciences by the Medical Library Association.

The journals listed here have been evaluated with a series of standards and criteria and selected to appear on this list by an active group of reviewers in AVSL. These journals have met those standards and other potential journals are reviewed each month to be added to the list. If you do not see a title, then it could be that it has not been reviewed yet or our criteria were not met. See below for our main points of criteria and standards. At this time, trade journals are not being reviewed for inclusion.

These listed journals include research topics in:

  • vision science
  • optometry
  • ophthalmology

All journals in this list meet the following Minimum Criteria:

  • Considered a journal publication (ie. Periodical publication schedule, varying authorship, collection of articles)
  • Includes an ISSN
  • Covers the appropriate scope (vision science, optometry, ophthalmology)
  • Has published for 2+ years

The journals that pass the minimum criteria are then reviewed using the following classes of criteria:

  • Policy Statements
  • Publication Information
  • Editorial Information
  • Content Quality
